A culmination of friendship and a love for music defines Lorelei Records. The Santa Cruz-based label started its engine in 2001, with the initiative of Russ Rankin and Joe Clements. Both born and raised in Santa Cruz, California, on a steady diet of skateboarding and punk rock. Their first bond was created in the legendary original line-up of Fury 66, where Russ played guitar while Joe took on the vocal duties. Russ has been leading the esteemed Good Riddance (Fat Wreck Chords) for 15 years, playing bass in a side band called Creep Division, singing strong in Olny Crime, and also finding the time to produce other bands in the studio. Joe now runs Compound Recording Studio. He has since played with Audiocrush, Turnedown, Fuck the Hope You Gave Me, and Crucial Unicorn.
While initially starting the label as a side project between tours and other obligations, Lorelei is quickly blooming into a solid force to be reckoned with. With the post-punk leanings of the Audiocrush release as a foundation, they quickly moved forward to their second release, a CD EP by The Fire Sermon, who blend late 70's rock and roll with old school punk ala the Adolescents. With both bands tailing along on recent Good Riddance tours, the label has created an impeccable buzz. The next release came in the form of the female fronted Here Kitty Kitty. Their record is stuffed with garage punk and catchy pop. This release only solidified the notion that the label is not one to be pigeonholed as only catering to one style of music.
July 2nd 2002 saw the release of "Cover Ups," a compilation featuring all the cover songs Good Riddance has ever recorded. The album exceeded expectations and helped Lorelei to grow in a big way. This release also marked a huge step in distribution.
With a swift start and a bright future, Lorelei plans to keep the releases coming.
